Buying a used iPhone: check screen, camera, and functions before you pay

Anti-scam guide Issue 02: before you pay, check screen (solid color / touch / True Tone), cameras (bright surface / Face ID), and functions (dialer, NFC, SIM tray, call proximity, Wi‑Fi / Bluetooth, audio, charging). Powers on with photos ≠ ready for daily use.

Buying a used iPhone: check screen, camera, and functions before you pay

Power-on and pretty photos do not mean it is safe to use.
Walk screen, cameras, and functions before you pay.
Anti-scam guide Issue 02 — supplements Issue 01 basics; not a push to check out.

After Issue 01: screen / camera / functions

Issue 01 covered four basics: why the price is low, whether the battery lasts a day, whether the phone is locked, and who handles problems. This issue fills the traps private deals often skip: screen, cameras, function checks.

Grades A+ / A / B / C describe appearance; touch, cameras, and Face ID need a separate check.

1. Screen

  1. Solid / high-contrast — white, black, or high-contrast; look for blotches, yellowing, bright/dark pixels, bleed, tint.
  2. Full-screen touch — edge to edge; mash dialer digits.
  3. Brightness + About — Settings → General → About; watch Parts and Service History / unknown parts.
  4. True Tone — Settings → Display & Brightness; toggle present and colour shift natural (often missing after a non-genuine screen).

2. Cameras

  1. Rear — aim at a bright wall/ceiling; try 0.5× / 1×; watch for fixed black spots, haze, tint. Live viewfinder, not old gallery shots.
  2. Front + Face ID — selfie preview OK; Settings → Face ID & Passcode; complete setup (try Face ID with a Mask if shown — common on iPhone 13 / 14 with newer iOS; follow this unit’s menus).

3. Functions

  • Dialer digits one by one
  • NFC if available (test/transit card near upper back)
  • SIM tray intact; insert SIM; short call for earpiece / far-end audio; palm over top of screen should dim (proximity sensor)
  • Speaker / mic / buttons / torch
  • Wi‑Fi / Bluetooth — Settings → Wi‑Fi / Bluetooth; networks and devices appear
  • Wired charging spot-check (wireless is a bonus, not the minimum)

3-minute checklist

  • □ Solid-color screen OK
  • □ Full touch + dialer
  • □ Rear camera on bright surface; 0.5× / 1×
  • □ Front + Face ID setup
  • □ About Parts and Service History looks normal
  • □ True Tone present and colour shift natural
  • □ Call: earpiece OK, other side hears you, palm over top dims screen
  • □ Wi‑Fi / Bluetooth: can find networks and devices
  • □ NFC (if available) / audio-buttons / wired charge
  • □ Issue 01 four: clear price reason, battery screenshot in hand, Apple ID signed out, someone accountable after-sales
