### Buying a used iPhone: grades A+, A, B, C mean looks — not function

> **A higher grade ≠ a better phone to use.**
> **Grade C ≠ a broken phone.**
> This is **anti-scam guide** Issue 04 — after “check first, then read local prices” — not a push to check out.

---

### After Issues 01–03: decode the grade letter

Issue 01 covered price, battery, locks, after-sales, then local bands. Issues 02–03 added screen/camera function checks and battery/locks in depth. This issue tackles the next confusion: **what A+ / A / B / C actually mean** — and how to skip vague “almost new” / “near A” talk.

---

### One rule: grade ≠ function

On the used market, **A+ / A / B / C** should describe **cosmetic condition** — visible wear on screen glass, frame, back, and camera ring. It should **not** imply a better battery, stronger signal, or “more expensive = more usable.”

Solid practice: every listed unit passes the **same functional checks** and should be **fully functional**; the letter only says how used it looks. Battery health and locks belong in separate fields — not buried inside a fuzzy “great condition.”

---

### How this series splits the work

| Issue | Job |
| ------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **01** | Why the price is low; after-sales; local going rates |
| **02** | **Function** — touch / backlight, cameras, Face ID, calls |
| **03** | Battery Maximum Capacity; Apple ID / Find My; SIM lock |
| **04 (this)** | A+ / A / B / C = **cosmetic wear only** — does not replace 01–03 |

Grade C can show more scratches; dead touch, a weak battery, or Find My still on must not be waved away as “grade is about the same.”

### Four grades: where to look

Aligned with the public [grades page](https://www.gigglefone.com/en-US/grades?ref=giggle.blog) (appearance first). Ask for the standard, then match the real unit. Check **four zones** on every grade: screen front, frame, back, camera ring.

| Grade | Looks (plain English) | Look-ats |
| ------ | -------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **A+** | Near-mint — almost no visible use | Clean screen, frame, back, camera ring; you pay for looks, not better functions |
| **A** | Light use; small flaws easy to miss | Soft scratches at most \~25 cm under backlight; LCD intact (no liquid / bright-dark spots); no obvious hard scratches |
| **B** | General use; scratches you can notice | Light glare scratches or one feel-able scratch; small frame/back scuffs OK; LCD intact |
| **C** | Visible wear — more noticeable scratches or scuffs | More wear OK; body **no bend / crack**; LCD no liquid (aging marks may appear); function still per Issue 02 |

**Grade C ≠ broken:** under a proper standard it still passes function checks; you save the cosmetics premium. Common entry budgets often sit on Grade C / B iPhone 13 / 14.

**Floor rules:** function checks are the same set across grades; battery ≥85% (when stated) is a battery item, not “higher grade = higher battery”; cracks / deforming dents / liquid damage sit outside normal grade language.

### In person / on video: verify the claim

1. **Ask standard + letter** — “Public A+ / A / B / C? Which letter? What wear on screen and body?” Vague “looks great” = unclear.
2. **Close-ups under side light / backlight** — screen glass, four frame edges, back corners, camera ring. Far beauty shots hide scratches.
3. **Remove case and film temporarily** — thick cases hide knocks; refusal lowers trust.
4. **Label vs unit mismatch → do not pay** — labelled A / A+ but smashed corners + dense hard scratches + deeply scuffed ring → ask to re-label / re-price, or walk away.

---

### Five traps

1. **Made-up labels** — “near A,” “A-,” “almost new” without a public chart. Ask which standard and letter. Even A+/A/B/C without a chart and wear notes are just four letters — not endorsement.
2. **Hiding battery or locks behind grade** — clean looks do not replace Maximum Capacity screenshots or Find My / Apple ID checks.
3. **Treating C as “buyer beware only”** — “issues are normal / no function guarantee” is risk-shifting, not grading.
4. **Far / beauty photos only** — no side-light close-ups, no case/film removal → not verified yet.
5. **Packing function defects into a “grade discount”** — “cheaper because Grade C” while touch is dead or Face ID fails. Grade gaps cover cosmetics only; run Issue 02 before negotiating.

---

### Grades + local prices: worked example

Issue 01 noted: Grade C / B iPhone 13 / 14 often sit around **HKD 1,800–3,500**. Cleaner looks move toward A / A+ — typically a **cosmetics premium of a few hundred HKD upward**, not a function upgrade.

- High-grade price + unit that looks like C → pause (mislabelling or inflated grade).
- “A+” far below local rates with unclear wear/source → pause (Issue 01 “too low” logic).
- Fair C price, older looks, function / battery / locks pass → saving cosmetics premium, not gambling.

EUR figures differ; the method does not. For band examples, see [Issue 01](https://www.gigglefone.com/articles/hk-b2c-anti-scam-check-first-local-prices-2026-07-31?ref=giggle.blog).

### Before you pay

- \[ \] Standard + which A+ / A / B / C letter stated
- \[ \] Screen front under side light / backlight matches label
- \[ \] Frame corners (case off if needed) match label
- \[ \] Back scratch / dent density matches label
- \[ \] Camera ring close-up — no high-grade / deep-scuff mismatch
- \[ \] Film / case temporarily removed
- \[ \] Quote roughly fits grade + local rates
- \[ \] Grade not used to skip battery screenshot, Find My / account, after-sales
- \[ \] Function spot-check (Issue 02)
- \[ \] Clear mismatch → re-label / re-price or walk away — do not pay yet

### “Certified” still means endorsement

A shop that stands behind the phone means less risk on you. Solid endorsement usually:

- **Publishes A+ / A / B / C** · separates looks from function
- **80+ checks** · battery health ≥85% · real-unit photos
- **6-month warranty** · **14-day returns**
