Buying a used iPhone: grades A+, A, B, C mean looks — not function

After Issues 01–03: decode the grade letter

Issue 01 covered price, battery, locks, after-sales, then local bands. Issues 02–03 added screen/camera function checks and battery/locks. This issue: what A+ / A / B / C actually mean — and how to skip vague “almost new” / “near A” talk.

One rule: grade ≠ function

A+ / A / B / C should describe cosmetic condition — visible wear on screen glass, frame, back, and camera ring. They should not imply a better battery, stronger signal, or “more expensive = more usable.”

Every listed unit should pass the same functional checks and be fully functional; the letter only says how used it looks. Battery and locks are separate attributes.

How this series splits the work

Grade C can show more scratches; dead touch, a weak battery, or Find My still on must not be waved away as “grade is about the same.”

Four grades: where to look

Aligned with the public grades page. Ask for the standard, then match the real unit. Check four zones: screen front, frame, back, camera ring.

Grade C ≠ broken. Common entry budgets often sit on Grade C / B iPhone 13 / 14.

In person / on video: verify the claim

1. Ask standard + letter — vague “looks great” = unclear.
2. Close-ups under side light / backlight — not only far beauty shots.
3. Remove case and film temporarily.
4. Label vs unit mismatch → do not pay — re-label / re-price, or walk away.

Five traps

3. Treating Grade C as “no function guarantee”
4. Far / beauty photos only — no side-light close-ups
5. Packing function defects into a “grade discount”

Grades + local prices: worked example

Issue 01 FR-market examples: Grade C / B iPhone 13 / 14 often around ~220–450 €. Cleaner looks move toward A / A+ — typically a cosmetics premium, not a function upgrade.

• High-grade price + unit that looks like C → pause.
• “A+” far below local rates with unclear wear/source → pause.
• Fair C price, older looks, function / battery / locks pass → saving cosmetics premium.
